How to Keep Your Home Gym Clean

Those who are fortunate enough to have an indoor home gym can take advantage of space to exercise and stay fit in the privacy of their own home. While the benefits of an indoor home gym certainly make it a worthwhile investment, the one downside is that it doesn’t come with staff. Cleanup and maintenance are squarely on the shoulders of the homeowner. Here are a few simple things anyone can do to keep their home gym tidy and sanitary.

Eliminate the Sweat Smell

Fitness centers usually have the advantage of large and powerful HVAC systems that keep fresh air circulating into the building. For an indoor home gym, keeping doors and windows open to bring in fresh air will help, but this usually isn’t an option in winter. Instead, people can use an odor-neutralizing spray immediately after their workout to fight the smell of sweat. Pairing this with an essential oil diffuser will keep things smelling fresh when the gym isn’t in use.

Clean All Mats

A yoga mat is a versatile piece of fitness equipment that no indoor home gym should be without. They can support a variety of exercise routines and they are also fairly easy to clean. Many cloth or fabric varieties can be thrown into the washing machine. The rubber ones can be cleaned off with a sponge and water with a little dish or hand soap diluted into it. Depending on how frequently they’re used, it’s a good idea to wash them once every two or three weeks.

Wipe Down Machines

For both weight and cardio machines, sweat and grime can accumulate and leave equipment less than hygienic. Exercisers should keep a dry towel or cloth nearby during their workout to wipe down any sweat that gets on the equipment. A deeper clean should be done once a week with a wet rag. Any equipment with electronic components should be unplugged before coming into contact with water.
