Scroll down to learn more about preparing for a tennis court installation.

Designing and Building a Tennis Court

Adding a tennis court to your backyard is not as simple as clearing out some space and rolling out a surface. You’ll need to consider your budget, the use you want to get out of the surface, and how much maintenance you’re prepared to handle.

That’s where the professionals at New England Courts come in. Our courts are designed with safety in mind, and we can customize your court to meet your specific needs. Our experts can help you determine how to best utilize your outdoor (or indoor) space to serve your needs, what type of court is best for you, and what your maintenance plan will look like.

Choosing Your Court Type

Selecting the right surface for play is crucial. Tennis courts can be clay, grass, hard court, or artificial grass, with the most common type being a hard court. (If you’ve ever played tennis at your local neighborhood or city-owned courts, you’re likely familiar with hard courts.) Grass courts are played on by professionals during competitions such as Wimbledon and create the fastest play. The hard court is best for most athletes—the surface requires the least amount of maintenance and offers slower play than grass but faster play than clay. A clay surface will require more maintenance and allows for slower play and longer rallies.

Keep in mind that you could also choose a multi-sport court that is made for not only tennis, but also basketball, hockey, skating, and more to take full advantage of your outdoor space.

How Much Does a Tennis Court Installation Cost?

The cost of a tennis court installation varies depending on many factors including the surface material, the size of your preferred court, and how much work will have to go into the installation. For example, if your backyard space isn’t level or evenly compact, it will require more work upfront for a high-quality job. Our team of professionals can walk you through cost estimates of a tennis court installation.

Preparing the Ground for Install

Once you’ve worked with a professional to design your court, it’s time for the install. For proper tennis court installation, the ground needs to be both level and evenly compacted. A sloped ground can cause water to pool up on the court and cause damage to the surface. If the ground has not been packed evenly before a tennis court installation, the court can warp or crack.

Before installation, the area will also need to be cleared of weeds and vegetation, which can cause damage to the court. Hiring professionals to complete the tennis court installation will ensure that it is done properly and can stand up to years of play and weather conditions.
