Grass courts are played on by professionals during competitions such as Wimbledon and create the fastest play. The hard court is best for most athletes—the surface requires the least amount of maintenance and offers slower play than grass but faster play than clay. A clay surface will require more maintenance and allows for slower play and longer rallies.

A sloped ground can cause water to pool up on the court and cause damage to the surface. If the ground has not been packed evenly before a tennis court installation, the court can warp or crack.
