Three Tips for Improving Your Putting Skills

  • March 24, 2020
  • Athletes

Putting may seem like a simple concept, but it takes a lot of practice to perfect your technique. Following a few simple steps can help you nail down your putting skills and lower your score the next time you hit the green.

Check Your Body Alignment

The way you position your body is just as important as how you hold your putter. If your stance is off by even the slightest angle, your putt likely won’t go as planned. Make sure to keep your shoulders down and relaxed so that your arms hang, and keep your shoulders square to your target. The lines on your putter may help you to better visualize where your ball will go. Keep your body still and swing only from your shoulders, not your wrist.

Practice Relaxed Control

Precise putting involves maintaining control over your putter without overpowering it. A grip that is too strong is as ineffective as a grip that is too weak. Consider the perfect grip as a symbiotic relationship between your putter and your hands in which both play a critical role in reaching your intended target. You can test your grip by holding your putter with your trail hand and flexing and extending your wrist. Then, do it again with your lead hand. If you notice that the putter face is opening and closing by a large margin with very little movement of your wrist, this is indicative of a poor grip. Practice angling your wrists downward for a smoother, more accurate putt.

Install a Putting Green

The best way to fine-tune your putting skills is to practice, and there’s nothing more convenient than your own green. Installation is easy, and it may be more affordable than you think. They’re also resistant to wear and weather, which is critical in regions that experience harsh weather conditions. Modern, synthetic turf greens are designed to withstand frequent use, so you, your family, and your golfing buddies can take advantage of the opportunity to sharpen your putting skills as often as you’d like.
